What began as a $50,000 donation/grant from Avon and the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO) over four years ago has now evolved into a project deeply rooted in the support and dedication of dozens of committed volunteers and staff around Ohio who strongly believe that everybody deserves access to health care and the chance to prevent and/or detect cancer in its earliest stages. Named after the central value of our work….hope… Project Hoffnung has educated and screened well over 1,500 Amish & Mennonite women throughout the rural and Appalachian regions of our state.
Now a statewide program, there are three main areas of focus with our project:
1) to provide culturally appropriate education about the early detection of breast cancer and breast health to settlements throughout Ohio;
2) to link Amish & Mennonite women with no-cost mammography and follow-up services with local hospitals, clinics, and mobile mammography services; and
3) to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of the Amish & Mennonite communities with respect to breast health care.
